It was in 1945, after the horror of the Second World War, that countries wanted to create an international organization to maintain peace in the world.

Henry Dunant, from Geneva, decided to create this organization to help the wounded of armed conflicts after witnessing the dramatic fate of the wounded left on a battlefield in Solferino (Italy).

The choice was between Geneva and Brussels but after many discussions, the support of different personalities, such as W. Rappard, and the presence of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva was chosen.

The flag was adopted in 1947, the drawing symbolizes a map of the world but seen "from above" with the North Pole in the center, and around the map, a crown of olive branches; which represents peace and security for all the countries of the world.

The drafting of the Charter of the United Nations in 1945 marks the creation of the United Nations.

Switzerland is the only country to have held a popular referendum to decide on the country's membership of the United Nations. Wanting to keep their neutrality, the Swiss refused several times before agreeing to join in 2002.

These languages correspond to those of the countries that created the United Nations (United States, USSR, France, United Kingdom, China) and to the languages most spoken in the world (Spanish and Arabic).

The general mission (peacekeeping through different objectives and themes) of these two types of organizations is the same, however, as its name indicates, the members of an NGO are not States.

These bodies all have specific functions that enable the organization to achieve its objectives.

The United Nations has implemented more than 60 achievements, aimed at the well-being, peace, and better living conditions of all men on Earth since its inception.
